Laying The Ghost A comedy by Simon Williams
Lucilla's Spring 2002 production was this fast moving, witty play set in Yew Tree House, a retirement home for actors and actresses. The plot revolves around an ex-actress, Margot Buchanan (played by Margaret Chambers) who does not want to be reminded that it is her 70th birthday! Unfortunately for her, most of the residents around her are keen on celebrating it!
The rest of the cast includes a wonderful collection of interesting characters! There is Freda (played by Aileen Ward), Margot's psychic friend, who is in touch with ghosts while endeavouring to complete a jigsaw puzzle of The Full Monty; Mrs. Kidd (played by Pauline Ordish), the no nonsense manager of the Home; Sir Leo Buchanan (played by Gordon Craig), Margot's ex-husband and a philanderer and womaniser; Judy his current wife (played by Margaret McDowell), and Sadie Croft (played by Wendy Stone), an aspiring young actress.
Sir Leo unfortunately suffers a fatal heart attack, and the scene is set for much chaos and hilarity as his ghost appears, anxious to sort out matters between his three women, and visible only to Freda! Everything does sort itself out but not before a deeply touching ending when Margot receives a very unexpected birthday gift.
Directed by Kate Sumner, ‘Laying the Ghost’ was presented at Crosby Civic Hall on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, 14, 15 & 16 March 2002.
